Feats Don’t Fail Me Now!

This was the title of a great album from 1974 by the band Little Feat:

This weekend, it took on a new meaning for Lady Fossil and me.  Just as we were crossing an intersection after a little walk of a couple of miles, we faced a very big, rented U-Haul Rental Truck:

imageNow, there is a problem with people renting these trucks.  They aren’t really truck drivers!!!

The above is the intersection where we were crossing as viewed on Google Earth.  It is safer from a satellite!  The truck was where I have circled in blue the vehicle.  It’s path is described by the blue line.  Our path is in red, walking with the walk light.

The guy in the truck was unused to actually looking at the ground from that height, I suppose.  In any case, he started as we started.  We assumed he saw us, but I kept my eye on him.  He accelerated and I yelled, “Lady Fossil, look out!” and grabbed her arm to run – which both of us at our ages were delighted to find still happens!  Otherwise, we would have been obliterated right where you see the red X.

Love it when our feats don’t fail us.

  1. Some feat to keep your feet on the ground in such a situation!

    1. Grannymar, let's just say it definitely got our attention!

  2. I do hope you wear bright colors. I do, since I was knocked down and my hair flattened. I wouldn't mind only I was on my way home from the beauty parlour.

    1. Violet, we may need to wear neon clothes at this rate! We thought carrying flashlights at all times when the light is anywhere near dim was adequate. But, I may need to follow your tip.

I hope you weren't hurt badly beyond the hairdo! That sounds awful.

  3. The hair broke right off, my stylist says it is because of the peroxide in the Blonder. I have a Vizi-vest and wear it all the time now.

  4. My hair managed to exit without any external help, so I would have some advantage there. But ... the Vizi-vest sounds like a good idea. I'm going to look into that.

  5. Having driven a truck purely as an emergency substitute, I can understand how difficult it is for someone not used to driving one. It is indeed very different from driving an ordinary car. Anyway, all is well that ends well TOF and Lady TOF.

    1. At one time, I had a Commercial Drivers License and drove moderately big trucks. If you don't know what you are doing, you become a real menace, Rummuser, because just as you say, it is nothing like driving an ordinary car. The braking distance is much greater and the turning radius much wider.

My dog used to ride with me. Great dog! But, she shifted axles on me once in traffic. Now, that was interesting.
